Chapter 9
Ryan
ONE MONTH LATER
Iâm walking out of the leasing office, finally done with all things Emilia. My name is officially off the lease, and I am not legally bound to this damn apartment, or Emilia Miller. Iâm proud of myself for not calling in my dad and while it took longer than I wanted, I can breathe freely.
âRy, can we talk? Please,â Emilia says, walking out right after me.
âEmilia, letâs not make this a thing. Whatâs done is done. I really donât want to hear anything you have to say. Iâm not mad or angry. Iâm not vindictive. I just want to be done with you. Your need to explain yourself is for your benefit and to make yourself feel better and, frankly, itâs not my job to listen to you anymore. I set a boundary and you need to respect that. You feel guilt and itâs eating away at you because you always need to be the best and most liked. You should seek some therapy and decide if you can forgive yourself. You wonât get what you want from me. Not anymore. Goodbye.â I end my long-winded fucking speech and turn right around and head to my car. The sooner I get out of here, the better. No longer hearing her voice is a welcome relief.
Leaving Morgan Creek and heading back home feels good. The last month has been an adjustment, and not just from readjusting to living at home. I also started my internship at Harding and Lively, which brought its own set of challenges, but easing into a relationship with my dad has been stressful. Heâs very much his way or nothing kind of man, and it takes some getting used to. But I think itâs what I need and without spilling the exact details to my therapist, they have helped me see that I am my best self when I have a strict guideline or regiment in place.
Itâs Friday, and I took the day off to finalize this shit and I know Dad is at the office, but I reach up to hit the call button on my steering wheel anyway.
âBardot,â he answers gruffly, and I canât help but roll my eyes.
âWould it kill you to look at the caller ID and see itâs me calling before answering?â
He chuckles before responding, âKill me? No, but I am drowning in paperwork right now and Lorna needed the next couple of weeks off to go visit her new grandchild. How did everything go?â
âItâs all done and Iâm heading home now. Just wanted to let you know and see if you need anything from me. I was going to stop and grab lunch. Can I bring you anything?â
âYea baby, bring me lunch and if you want to really help me out, I wonât say no. You feel like filling in for a couple of hours and getting some of these papers off my desk?â He asks and immediately images of me pressed up against the floor to ceiling window as he fucks me spring to mind.
